Recruitment Agencies, and what to expect.

By Tony Bareham

Recruitment Agencies and online job hunting

There are seemingly ever more recruitment agencies appearing online these days. That fact alone, you may find strange but be under no illusions, the jobs available havent actually increased in number that dramatically.

There are many do's and many don'ts when dealing with agencies and i would like to explore just a few of them.

The first thing to realise and accept is that one job vacancy will very likely be advertised by potentially several dozen agencies. This happens because the only the agency that supplys the sucessful candidate gets paid.

The second is that the vacancy may not actually still exist! Recruitment agencies are known to leave some of the 'juiciest' jobs advertised in order to draw in applications to ultimately divert the jobseeker to another vacancy that might not be so appealing.

The third is that the agency will try to flex its muscles at every opertunity. How much they get away with is up to you and how badly you want the job in question.

And fouth is that you will probably be just one applicant of hundreds that apply for each of the jobs listed on recruitment websites.

The do's

when dealing with online recruitment sites/agencies make sure you have uploaded your CV (resume). With some sites/agencies its optional and with others it's not. The reason for this is that it quite often is searchable so even if you havent applied for a job, you may still get asked. Very useful unless your scouring the site 24/7.

Agencies will rarely tell you who the potential employer is until the very last minute to prevent themselves being circumvented so make sure your CV is based in fact and accurate. (remember you dont always know who will see it!)

An all to common tactic these days when dealing for the first time with an agency, is for the agency to tell you that you have to attend and interview with them before they will consider your application or forward your CV to the employer. In my personal experience this is a very good indicator the job you actually applied for online does not exist and they are also pointless waste of time and money unless you live local to the agency as the 'recruitment consultant' in all likelyhood will not really know much about your talents and experience unless they have been in the same job themselves previously. So before attending a 'recruitment interview' satisfy yourself the job you actually applied for DOES exist and your CV WILL be forwarded to that employer.

Project a positive image whether it be over the phone, email or in person. Dont be afraid to ask a lot of questions, not only about the job but the agency

BUT

remember the 'recruitment consultant' will in all likelyhood be on a commission, so dont just accept everything your told in the first instance as fact unless the consultant can back up his/her statements and clearly has a good grasp of the kind of job your looking for.

The big no no's

Dont ever supply an agency with your National Insurance Number, Your Bank Details, Your Driving Licence Number, Credit Card Numbers or any other sensitive information for any reason. They dont need it and no legitimate agency would ask.

If your asked for a retainer fee or any other kind of payment for putting you forward for a job or simply keeping you on file... WALK AWAY.
