President Bush receives "farewell kiss" in Baghdad

President Bush gets a “farewell kiss” in Iraq During a surprise visit to Iraq just a few weeks before handing power to his successor Barack Obama received a distinct reminder of his unpopularity in the region. While giving a press conference in Baghdad a protester since identified as Muntadar al-Zeidi hurled a pair of shoes at the president while screaming in Arabic “This is a farewell kiss, you dog!” President Bush managed to duck both the shoes, but joked later “It was a size 10”. While stating that the war was not over the president commented “It is decisively on its way to being won”. The visit comes in the wake of a recent US – Iraqi agreement on internal security which will see the US Soldiers currently deployed in Iraq (currently reported to be in the order of 150,000) withdraw by the end of 2011. The visit is also a reminder that more than 4200 US troops have lost their lives in 5 years and 9 months of fighting. Although the war in Iraq has become globally unpopular, one can not help but wonder whether things would have been better or even different if the US/UK forces had not invaded Iraq. Given the reasons for the invasion of Afghanistan and the damage done to the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, Would Saddam Hussein have just sat on the side lines and watched? I doubt it somehow given his known history of brinkmanship with the west. I suspect he would have found a way to assist the Taliban and almost certainly the Al-Qaeda terrorists. Maybe western forces being in the Middle East was inevitable? We will never know. What we do know is that the brave and courageous men and women of the US and UK armed forces are doing a dangerous job and deserve everyone’s best wishes regardless of their political standpoint on the war. Soldiers regardless of rank only conduct wars, Its Politicians that start them.
