Getting back into work after bereavement
By T Bareham
Ok, so the worst possible scenario has happened.. your fiancee/partner has been diagnosed with a terminal condition and given a year to eighteen months to live and will need round the clock care towards the end. The first thing i did was what i suspect most people would do, i quit my very demanding job to look after her.. and spend what quality time we could before the end. The worst has now happened and i have taken time out to sort myself out.. and now ready to return to the world of work.. NEVER would i have guessed that doing the "right thing" as i have been told i did, would also be the single largest barrier to getting back into work. After 27 Interviews for jobs i am more than qualified to do and directly experienced in i reached the point of being fed up with hearing recruitment agencies telling me i had actually lost the job to a less qualified / experienced candidate and ultimately arranged a brutally frank meeting with one agency. They went off and did some research and then after yet another journey into London i was shocked at what i heard.. feedback in the vein of "that kind of experience makes him a candidate for future psycological problems" and "if he gives up work for that, what else would he leave for?" had been recieved post interview and during follow ups by the agencies with the employers. So whats the answer? well i guess i will ultimately have to fabricate a 'history' for the time in question.. Not ideal i know and if found out it could also lose me the job.. but unfortunately if doing the right thing in my mind is going to cost me possible jobs at the interview stage there are very few alternatives.
